Garuda Purāņa has detailed description of the journey to various lōkas after death. Its quite possible that Bardö Thödol has borrowed knowledge from it.

True. I am not sure about the dating of the Garuda Purana, though, and how it may have interacted with the transmission of Buddhism from India to Tibet. It would be an interesting point to research further.
